Colombia agreed Sunday to take back some of its deported citizens after President Trump ordered tariffs and other restrictions to be put on the nation over its refusal of two U.S. planes carrying Colombian migrants.

Shortly after Mr. Trump made the tariff threat Sunday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro offered to send a presidential plane to the U.S. to pick up the deported Colombians, while insisting that his government still wanted to ensure a “dignified” process for deporting the migrants and later threatening retaliatory tariffs of his own.

The tiff began Sunday when Mr. Petro announced the refusal of two U.S. military planes carrying deported Colombians expected to land there that day. According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the planes were already in the air.

Mr. Trump swiftly brought the hammer down.

“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia,” he wrote Sunday on Truth Social.
