The Presidency has raised alarm over what it described as a calculated plot by opponents of reform to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, alleging that anti-reform forces have begun to “band together” against the administration.

“Haters of Nigeria’s progress are banding together to overthrow an administration that has been the most focused, most transformative in our history,” Onanuga wrote.

He described the Tinubu administration as “the most focused and transformative in Nigeria’s history,” adding that the reforms already underway are beginning to reposition the country’s future.

Citing the economic challenges faced by the administration, Onanuga referenced a 2022 remark by Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who warned Nigerians not to expect an easy path from meaningful reform.

“Emir Sanusi warned Nigerians what to expect from President Tinubu’s reforms. ‘It’s not going to be easy.’ If anybody tells you it would be easy, don’t vote for him,” Onanuga quoted.

His remarks follow the unveiling of an opposition coalition last week. The coalition has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections and attracted several prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The emergence of the coalition has already triggered a wave of high-profile defections, including from within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
