President Bola Tinubu has stepped down as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, following the expiration of his tenure today. The Nigerian leader is set to hand over the leadership baton to another head of state. It was gathered that the organization is currently holding its 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority in Abuja. Throughout his tenure, Tinubu tackled numerous challenges, particularly military coups in member states. Initially, he took a strong stance against unconstitutional changes in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, leading to the imposition of sanctions. However, ECOWAS later adopted a more peaceful approach, resulting in the lifting of sanctions.

Despite these challenges, Tinubu played a crucial role in ensuring the successful 2024 Senegalese election by facilitating dialogue among stakeholders. His resignation comes days after Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger confirmed that they will not return to ECOWAS under military leadership. During his term, he faced the daunting task of addressing political instability in the region. Tinubu’s initial response to military coups was firm, imposing sanctions on the affected countries. This approach aimed to uphold democratic principles within the region. However, recognizing the need for a more diplomatic solution, ECOWAS shifted its strategy. The sanctions were lifted as the organization sought peaceful resolutions. Tinubu’s leadership was instrumental in navigating these complexities, showcasing his ability to adapt and respond to evolving situations. One of Tinubu’s significant achievements was his role in the 2024 Senegalese election. By fostering dialogue among various stakeholders, he ensured a smooth and credible electoral process. This achievement underscored his commitment to promoting democratic values and stability in West Africa. His resignation comes at a critical time, with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger firmly rejecting a return to ECOWAS under military regimes. This development highlights the ongoing challenges the organization faces in maintaining unity and democratic governance in the region. His tenure leaves a legacy of both firm action and diplomatic engagement, reflecting the complexities of leading a regional body in turbulent times.
