Osun 2018: APC Gives Condition For Aregbesola's Successor

As Osun state prepares for the 2018 gubernatorial elections, APC has made it clear that disloyalty will not be tolerated

The party’s publicity secretary also spoke on who was likely to succeed Rauf Aregbesola

The party also denounced insinuations that PDP would overthrow them in the forthcoming elections in the state

All Progressives Congress (APC) publicity secretary, Kunle Oyatomi while speaking to journalists in Osogbo, Osun state has revealed conditions for Aregbesola's successor.

Ahead of the 2018 governorship elections, he declared that disloyal members and those lacking in party discipline will not be considered as candidates worthy of flying the party’s flag.

According to Premium Times, while speaking on Friday, September 23, he said the party remained a disciplined one and would consider loyalty, competence and quality in deciding who would earn the APC ticket.

He said the party would consider only those able to continue the developmental successes of the Aregbesola administration.

He also said: “A saboteur cannot qualify. An undisciplined person cannot qualify and a person who is not ingrained in and with all the developments that have taken place under Aregbesola, cannot be trusted to succeed him.

“Anybody who has motives inconsistent with and treacherous in the main, against what Aregbesola has done can never, ever be the party’s choice in Osun.

“Also anyone who is looking outside Osun APC to win the party’s nomination will fail and therefore cannot succeed Aregbesola.”

The opposition PDP has boasted that it would overthrow the APC government in the state. However the APC in its statement said they would remain victorious.

Mr Oyatomi said Osun west senatorial district bye-election was not a proper gauge for the popularity of the APC in the state.

“Let’s put that victory in context as we have said earlier. The figures revealed that the majority of votes that gave the PDP the victory came from Ede land- Ede North, Ede South and Egbedore.

“The Adeleke factor is predominant and sabotage by the APC dissidents added significantly to PDP victory.

“But as a district, Osun West is less than 20 per cent of the total votes needed to win the governorship."

On why the APC lost the election, Mr Oyatomi said: “The first aspect is that the passing of the former senator, late Isiaka Adeleke created genuine sympathy that was politically exploited by his brother who succeeded him with the assistance of the APC members who sabotaged the party.

“The second aspect is that strategic errors were made, which we have identified, but we refuse to talk about. Those errors will not be repeated.”

Meanwhile, Rauf Aregbesola, the governor of Osun state, has frowned against the agitation for local government autonomy.

According to him, those calling for local government autonomy were agents of confusion as granting autonomy to local government councils was antithetical to true federalism

Reports have it that he said local councils were administrative units of the state and therefore their autonomy may be the end of the states.

Obiano Is Best For Anambra - Says NBA Boss

The Aguata Branch Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) ,Mr. Clifford Okoye, says Governor Willie Obiano has an edge over other contestants in the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial race.

He said he reached the conclusion with regards to numerous achievements of Obiano within the space of three and half years in office.

Mr. Okoye said this while analyzing which of the political parties that stands a better chance in Nov. 18 Governorship Election and stressed that Anambra State was no longer ready for ‘god fatherism’ which he posited has done so much harm to the state in the past.

Mr. Okoye maintained that he was optimistic that the upcoming election had already been won by Governor Obiano because of his developmental track records.

According to him, Governor Willie Obiano can walk on the streets with his shoulder high because he pays salaries and allowances of workers, as well as settled arrears of pensions and gratuities of retirees.

Moreover, he emphasized, the Governor has broken even and recorded budget surpluses, courtesy of high profile Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and boost in agriculture even in the midst of economic recession in the country.

True Federalism Will Solve Nigeria’s Challenges, Akeredolu Says

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) consultative zonal meeting on true federalism held in Akure yesterday as an opportunity for Nigerians to remove the albatross in the nation’s constitution, which hinder her progress.

Akeredolu said this at the zonal meeting on restructuring held at the state’s International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome).

The stakeholders comprise representatives from Osun , Ekiti and Ondo States. The Governor charged them  to seize the meeting as opportunity to right the wrongs in the constitution and the Nigerian structure, saying that it will go a long way in managing  affairs maturely and peacefully resolve all contending issues in the polity.

According to him, “We must take steps that will make Nigeria focus on sustainable human, social and economic development. “

Represented by his Deputy, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, the Governor said the need to suggest a series of reforms culminating in a new constitutional order cannot be over-emphasised.

At the meeting, stakeholders expressed concern about devolution of powers, what should be the federating units, fiscal federalism, revenue allocation, derivation principles, form of government, creation and/or merger of states, regionalism, state police, federal character and local government autonomy among others.

Akeredolu noted that the call by most Nigerians for true federalism is an indication that something must be done urgently to assuage the nerves of all concerned and navigate the country’s ship from the precipice.

His words: “We call on all concerned to allow the true spirit of patriotism and nationalism to prevail at the end of the exercise which we must see to a logical conclusion.”

Speaking at the event, Secretary, All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee on True Federalism, Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi said the committee will consult the report of the 2005 Political Reforms Conference, the 2014 National Confab and reports of previous national conferences in its assignment to determine the party’s position on restructuring.

Represented by a member of the Committee, Mrs Rachael Akpabio, Adetunmbi said the Committee met four times and identified 12 key issues for discussion at the public hearing.

According to him, the public hearing which will hold in Benin, Enugu and Ibadan will end with a meeting with civil society organisations and professional groups in Abuja on October 9.

He said: “Accordingly, and pursuant to its mandate, the Committee met, deliberated and listed out the following issues and called for memoranda from members of the public.

“The 12 issues Nigerians will have opportunity to air their views on are as follow; Creation/merger of states and the framework and guidelines for achieving that;

Derivation principle bordering on what percentage of federal collectible revenue should be given back;

Devolution of powers on what item on the exclusive legislative list should be transferred to the recurrent list and federating units, especially state and community police, prisons

Federation Units: Should Nigeria be based on regions or zones or 36-state structure; Fiscal federalism and revenue allocation and Form of government (parliamentary or presidential)

Others are; Independent candidacy; Land tenure system; Local government autonomy; Power sharing and rotation; Resource control; and Type of legislature.

Adetunmbi said contributions would not be limited to members of the party, but to all Nigerians who have something meaningful to say on the development of the country.

“We must recognise that the work of nation building is an ongoing process in which every stakeholder has a role to play, by making his own contribution. In this case, the APC as a national political party is an institution and a stakeholder that has a role to play in making its own contribution.

“This exercise is its own way of making that contribution. The APC felt that it is not necessary to think alone among ourselves, but to also ask members of the public what they think. That is why everything this Committee is doing is not about its own opinion, but harvesting the opinion of the ordinary people in order to form an opinion. After all, no political party exists just by itself, but by the mandate of people.

“In this regard, we have put up an announcement calling on members of the public to submit memorandum and meet us at designated venues without any discrimination. So, it is an open invitation to all Nigerians to attend and make their views and voices to count”, he said.

Also contributing, Senator Olorunnimbe Farukanmi, from Akure North Local Government, decried the excessive proliferation of states and local governments in Nigeria which has created numerous problems in the presidential and unitary form of government being funded with the crude oil wealth.

He suggested for restructuring, parliamentary system of government as against the expensive Presidential system which had impacted negatively on the infrastructural resources available for the populace.

He however, canvassed for the local government autonomy to be upheld in order for the resources acruable to them be used for their development, thereby making each of them independent.

Olorunnimbe also agitated for each level of government to be allowed to remain as provided for, by the constitution and as well, canvassed for the creation of North West, North East, North Central, South West, South East and the South South regions.

Addressing Journalists after the exercise, Mrs Akpabio stated that APC is taking a position on how and when the Country would be restructured.

“To this end, we have been able to collect some memorandum. We will read through them, put them together and present them to the party (APC) that sent us and thereafter, make our position known about the restruction of this country.

“I am glad that the outing was a success and I thank all the participants for their matured conducts”, she said.

Presenting a memorandum, Olukare of lkare, HRM, Obas Akadiri Momoh, assured the support of royal fathers for the development and unity of the country.

On his part, the Osenawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, noted that Nigeria ad a diverse social polity with many ethnic -linguistic groups, saying there must be equity , justice and sense of belonging through empowerment of the constituents.

Conspiracy Between INEC, Police And APC Is A Threat To Democracy, Says Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that the illegal conspiracy between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Police is a threat to the nation's democracy.

Speaking on Friday when granted audience to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Wike stated that following the use of the Police to deny the people of Rivers East Senatorial District their mandate, the APC has made it their official policy.

According to him: "The strategy has been adopted by the APC was experienced in Rivers State during the rerun elections. We have to alert all other Nigerians about this strategy.

"The alarm we have raised on the printing of fake result sheets was correct. They used Special Anti-robbery Squad to abduct INEC officials and smuggle in fake results ".

He called on all the political parties to be vigilant and stop the actualization of the plot of APC to rig the 2019 polls.

"They know Nigerians are tired of being deceived. That is why they will plan to massively rig the 2019 elections. As IPAC members, you must be vigilant. They will do everything possible, including killing dozens of persons to remain in power. This is because the people have rejected them, " he said.

The governor said that despite the anomaly that greeted the Rivers East Senatorial District election, INEC has remained silent. He said that INEC must offer explanation on the fraud APC used the Police to perpetrate.

Governor Wike added that all other political parties participating in the forthcoming Anambra Governorship election must be vigilant as the APC is planning to rig the polls.

"Democracy is under threat. We must defend it, he said.

In his remarks, the Secretary of IPAC, Chief Perry Opara said Rivers State is working because Governor Wike is investing in development projects.

He commended Governor Wike for carrying all political parties along in Rivers State, urging the Federal Government to imbibe the same pattern which will reduce tension in the country.

The 46 Political Parties of IPAC conferred on Governor Wike, "Most Opposition Friendly and Eagle of Nigeria ".

NULGE National Executive Endorses Obiano For Second Tenure

Governor Willie Obiano says his government is working through a Special Committee on outstanding workers' demands which it set up to address the disparity in the salaries of local and State government workers.

The Governor disclosed this when he received the National President of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel and some officials of the Union at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia.
The NULGE National President and the entourage from the Union's National Secretariat were in the state as part of their nationwide advocacy campaign for Local Government Autonomy and to affirm the position of Labour in the state endorsing Governor Obiano for a second term in office.

Addressing his guests, Governor Obiano who said the imbalance will be addressed very soon, noted that after his eight-year tenure, he would want to be remembered as the most workers-friendly Governor the State has ever had.

On the clamour for local government autonomy, Governor Obiano explained that the average monthly Federal allocation for local governments is about 2.3 billion but the cost of running them runs in excess of that, adding for the past nine months, his government had supported the local government system financially from the state's internally generated revenue and had not owed any worker.

He however commended the labour leadership in the State for supporting the initiative to rid the state workforce of ghost workers and assured workers in the state that despite the challenges, his administration has placed their welfare as a first line charge and will not renege in its obligations towards them.

The NULGE National President, Comrade Khaleel explained that their decision to align with the State Labour union in endorsing the Governor was because of the improved working condition the state workforce has enjoyed under his leadership as well as the transformational strides of his administration that has placed the state in an enviable position nationwide.

He expressed optimism that the Governor will look into the outstanding issues of the local government workers especially as it concerns disparity in salaries with their state counterpart with a view to addressing them permanently.

Earlier in his remarks, the State Head of Service, Bar. Harry Udu noted that whenever Labour calls in the state, his office is usually willing to receive them as against what obtains in other states, attributing the development to the Governor's humane disposition towards workers in the state.

In a vote of thanks, the National Vice President, Southeast, Comrade Patrick Igwe described Governor Obiano as a rare gift to Anambra workers and said his leadership style poses a model in labor relations which his contemporaries across the country should emulate.

The NULGE National President was also accompanied on the visit by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress and State President of NULGE, Comrade Jerry Nnubia.

APC Is Sound And Healthy, South-South Leaders Reply Sagay, Secondus

South-South Leaders on Friday disagreed with Prof. Itse Sagay over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), advising him not to fuel crisis in the ruling party through wide and baseless allegations.

“APC is a success story and an example of how democracy can work. There is no confrontation between the stakeholders and the Presidency. The party is controlling the grassroots” the leaders said

At a meeting on critical issues surrounding democracy and economic development in Nigeria, the leaders commended the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party for discouraging violence, harmonizing all contending elements to minimize crisis and promoting internal democracy through free and fair elections.

“APC has made Nigeria stand up on its feet and be counted as one of the few most respected nations on earth” the leaders said.

In a statement in Calabar, the leaders praised the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun for changing the face of Nigeria politics and the nature of political discourse in the country, building a sustaining party apparatus, making the party attractive to individuals and groups and defending the electorate.

The leaders, who were angered over the state of the economy under PDP, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for leading Nigeria’s unprecedented growth, development and prosperity.

Particularly, they praised Buhari for the impressive recovery of the economy from recession and the modernization of the country’s infrastructure.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is moving Nigeria towards a higher level of sustainable prosperity” the leaders said.

Signed by the chairman of South- South Front, Chief John Harry, the leaders expressed disappointment over the incessant attack on the party by the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay.

The leaders were quick to downplay the views of the national coordinator, Freedom and Justice Movement (FJM), Dr. Breakforth Onwunbuya and Uche Secondus, former Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on 2019 general election and the performance of the Buhari-led APC government, telling Nigerians to shun them.

In a major show of dissent against Sagay, Secondus and Onwunbuya, the leaders said APC was not collapsing.”

They described Oyegun as a strong and stable leader.

“The PDP is deeply wounded. It has manifestly failed. APC will take Anambra and Ekiti states off APGA and PDP. It will also win the 2019 general election” the leaders said.

“We are sticking with APC in 2019 the leaders added.

Umahi Gets Commendations For His Visionary And Astuteness In Governance

Lady Monica Eze the President and Founder of a vibrant and virile grassroots NGO, the David Umahi Nweze Akubaraoha Ebonyi Transformation Agenda (DUNAETA) has described Governor David Nweze Umahi as the King Solomon of our generation for exhibiting high level of wisdom in discharge of his duties and piloting the affairs of Ebonyi State particularly how he used his office as the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum to ensure that the plot to annihilate the Igbo race was scuttled.

Lady Monica who though is from Ebonyi State is actually born in Adamawa State truly appreciates the wisdom demonstrated by the South East Governors' Forum in dousing the tensed environment as she knows the implication if not arrested the way Governor Umahi and his colleagues did, what this would have had on the Igbos residing in the North should the youths from the North have reacted negatively based on some of the actions of our youths in the South East during this period.

For Governor Umahi in conjunction with other Governors from the South East to have succeeded to douse the highly volatile and tensed environment by taken the actions they took surely demonstrates that the South East Governors can be trusted as true Igbo Leaders and should be accorded the required respect and honour for saving the Igbo race from annihilation and scuttling a war that would have taken us a race hundred years backward to survive.

DUNAETA Leader also congratulated the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Kashim Shettima who played a very vital and patriotic role in collaborating and initiating several peaceful meetings to ensure that the plots of the enemies of our country did not come to pass. For the Northern Governors Forum to have sent some delegates to the SS & SE States to assure the nation of the safety and security of Igbos in the North simply show their love for one virile, vibrant, egalitarian, indissoluble and united Nigeria.

Lady Monica Ada Chidinma Eze Aka Ada EBONYI who also doubles as the Technical Adviser To Governor Umahi further stated that no matter the stand of any body,  these Governors have done noble in preserving the unity of our Nation and demonstrated Leadership when it matters most and therefore deserve our respect and honour.

In the Press Statement circulated on Friday in Abakaliki, the DUNAETA president admonishes members of IPOB to take another look at their style of agitation as not to jeopardise the hug investment people from the South East have made in other parts of the country and avoid any further action that will portray our region in bad light before other regions. Igbos are very respectfully and resourceful people and we will excel the more in a bigger country like Nigeria than any other enclave. Dialogue is the key and ingredient to achieve whatever we intend to achieve as a region.

Having said this, I will like to urge the Federal Government under the able leadership of our father, President Muhammad Buhari to critically and passionately look at the issues that gave birth to these agitations and address them accordingly to avoid the reoccurrence of this unwarranted situation in our polity that is capable of scuttling our fragile democracy.

It is a fact that the SE region has suffered untold neglects in areas of dwindling and decayed infrastructure. More serious efforts must be channelled to address the unmotorable roads in the South East region. The second Niger Bridge must be delivered. The region must be linked with rail lines and most importantly our teeming unemployed youths must be employed and not discriminated against any more.

Finally, the additional State due to the region must be created. We urge a powerful Team comprising of our Governors, Leadership of Ohanaze Ndi Igbo, Traditional, Religious and political leaders from the region should sit and articulate these views and meet our dear President over them as a matter of urgency to show that the our region is not truly targeted to be under developed and motivate our youths never to rise up again against their Nation.

As I commend and congratulate my able Governor for demonstrating to the entire world that Ebonyi State has the very potential to show the light to our Nation, let me conclude by urging the Ebonyi Youths to unite and see the Umahi's administration as their own and in that regard Strategies to ensure the success of Engr David Nweze Umahi re-election bid come 2019 as it will be difficult to get any other youth friendly government like that of the Umahi's administration.

Gov. Umahi has proved without any doubt that he is a divine tool to reinvigorate and reposition Ebonyi State as one of the greatest States in Nigeria so the need for us the youths to unite behind him not be overemphasised.

PDP Suspends Ubah, Kashamu

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Ifeanyi Ubah, its Anambra state gubernatorial aspirant and Sen. Buruji Kasamu to face Disciplinary Committee.

Ubah who was was suspended for one month over matters related to indiscipline would also face disciplinary committee of the party.

Mr Dayo Adeyeye, PDP National Caretaker Committee, Publicity Secretary, said in Abuja.

Kasamu is a senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District.

Adeyeye said the decision was reached by the party National Caretaker Committee in line with the PDP constitution.

“This week, we had some disciplinary issues regarding the Anambra governorship primaries, in which one of the aspirants, Ifeanyi Ubah, launched a major media attack against the leadership of the party.

“Ubah, who was not satisfied with the decision of the Governorship Appeal Panel, decided to launch rhetoric attack on the leadership of the party.

“He also launched an attack on those who were involved in the conduct of the primary.”

Adeyeye explained that the National Caretaker Committee took the decision to issue him a query, asking him to retract the statement.

Ubah was also to offer apology to those who he disparaged by his remarks in the press, but he did not answer the query, he alleged.

“Of course the query was issued under relevant sections of the Constitution of the PDP, but he decided not to answer the query.

“Consequent upon which, the National Caretaker Committee on Thursday decided to suspend him for a period of one month and to refer the matter to National Disciplinary Committee for further action.

On Sen. Kashamu case, Adeyeye said he too was issued a query by the National Caretaker Committee some weeks ago over allegation of challenging the party’s decisions.

He said Kashamu in his reply to the query, denied some of the allegations against him.

“Consequent upon which, the National Caretaker Committee decided to refer his case to the National Disciplinary Committee for further action too.

“The National Disciplinary Committee is expected to report its findings to us within the next two weeks,” he added.

Adeyeye also disclosed that the party’s leadership had appointed the immediate Legal Adviser of the party, Mr Victor Kwon, as Legal Adviser to the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi.

When contacted, Ubah said he had yet to receive any query from the party leadership.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ubah had threatened to drag PDP to court over the Anambra governorship primary election which he lost to Mr Oseloka Obaze.

Also reacting to the development, Kashamu described the query issued to him as contemptuous of the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, issued on Sept. 5, 2017.

He said the court in Suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/732/2017 ordered that “all parties should desist from taking any further step or steps that may affect the respondents in this matter as previously made by Hon. Justice N. Dimgba on 10/8/2017”.
