The Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, Titilope Gbadamosi, has called on Nigerian youths to join the global effort to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking in commemoration with the United Nation International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
This year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention”, highlights the importance of effective drug policies based on science, research, compassion, and human rights.
According to the World Drug Report, drug abuse affects millions of people worldwide, with cannabis being one of the most commonly used substances among the youth demography.
The Special Assistant emphasized the need for increased awareness and understanding, advocacy for increased investment in prevention programs, empowerment of communities, and facilitation of dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders.
By investing in prevention programs, Nigeria can reduce drug-related harm among thr youths, promote a healthier and safer society, support youth to make informed choices about their health and well-being, and create a drug-free society.
The call comes as Nigeria grapples with the challenges of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which poses a significant threat to the health, security, and well-being of Nigerians, particularly young people.
The United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to raise awareness about the global drug problem and promote action against drug trafficking and abuse.
