The Niger State House of Assembly has called on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning “sign-out” celebrations in all secondary and tertiary schools across the state.

The call was made during Thursday’s plenary following a motion by Hon. Mohammed Sani Idris (Tafa Constituency), who raised alarm over the growing trend of violence, misconduct, and destruction linked to sign-out events.

“What started as a simple end-of-school celebration has now turned into chaos,” he told the House, citing recent incidents in Kontagora where two schools had to suspend their final examinations after violent clashes and the tearing of exam papers by students.

Several lawmakers echoed his concerns. Hon. Muhammad Alhaji Haruna (Bida South) described the celebrations as a descent into “bazaar, gangsterism, and immoral acts,” while Hon. Murtala Badaru (Suleja) said the situation was no longer acceptable, given the level of public outcry.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda, who presided over the session, said the House would engage the Ministry of Education and the state governor to put a total stop to the practice. She noted that a similar ban had earlier been enforced in Kontagora Emirate and stressed the need for a consistent, statewide policy to restore discipline in schools.
