The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has dismissed reports alleging the suspension of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, from the Conference.

Ogundoyin, who also serves as Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, issued a statement on Thursday in Ibadan, describing the publication as false, malicious, and an attempt to mislead the public.

An online blog had claimed that Egbedun was suspended over alleged insubordination and abuse of office. However, Ogundoyin said no such decision was ever taken, nor was any press briefing held to that effect.

“There was no such suspension. No press conference was held in Ibadan or anywhere else. No such pronouncement was made by me or any authorized representative of the Conference,” he said.

He emphasized that the Conference remains a transparent and responsible body guided by due process, especially in disciplinary matters.

“Egbedun remains a respected and active member of the Conference who has not been found wanting in any capacity,” he added.

Ogundoyin expressed disappointment at what he described as unethical conduct by the online platform and urged media organizations to verify facts before publication to avoid damaging reputations.

He also demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from the platform involved, warning that failure to comply could result in legal action.

“This is a reminder that freedom of the press comes with responsibility. Fake news must be tackled with urgency,” Ogundoyin said.

The Conference of Speakers is a non-partisan body comprising Speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria. Its core objectives include strengthening legislative institutions, promoting democracy, and fostering cooperation across state legislatures.
