Former Borno State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has hinted that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, may soon return to the PDP and emerge as its flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a televised interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Sheriff claimed that credible information available to him suggests Obi is preparing to return to his former party in a strategic political move.

“Peter Obi’s ambition is to become president. The information I have is that any moment from now, he will return to the PDP and contest the presidency from there,” Sheriff stated.

The comment comes amid rising speculation over the direction of Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Obi, a former Anambra State governor, had recently joined other opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition, an alliance formed with the aim of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next polls.

Sheriff further remarked that with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar still eyeing the presidency, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi remaining a political wildcard, Obi’s potential return could redefine the PDP’s internal dynamics.

“Atiku has been Vice President before, so for him, it’s president or nothing. But what states do they (Atiku and Amaechi) control now? That’s the real question,” Sheriff said.
