President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confessed he nearly skipped watching the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations due to fear of developing high blood pressure from anxiety.

Speaking while hosting Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the Aso Villa on Monday evening, the President said the high stakes of the match had him on edge.

“Honestly, I did not want to watch the match. I didn’t want high blood pressure,” Tinubu admitted. “But people came into my room and turned on my TV to that channel.”

The President said he felt restless and upset when Nigeria trailed 2-0 against host nation Morocco, but continued watching and was ultimately thrilled by the team’s resilience.

“When it was 2-0, I got very restless and very offended. But I was still there watching,” he said. “I was impressed by the indomitable spirit of resilience, determination and courage of the team.”

The Falcons pulled off a remarkable comeback, defeating Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final in Rabat on Sunday night to claim the continental title.

The team’s dramatic win was celebrated across Nigeria, with President Tinubu hailing them as national heroes and commending their never-say-die attitude.
