President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, announcing bold new initiatives targeting economic inclusion, digital connectivity, and job readiness for millions of young Nigerians.

Addressing a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday in commemoration of Democracy Day 2025, the President revealed that his government will roll out a consumer credit scheme for 400,000 young Nigerians, including serving youth corps members, beginning in July. The scheme, which follows earlier disbursements to over 100,000 Nigerians through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), is part of a broader strategy to enhance financial independence and purchasing power among the youth.

“We are committed to giving more opportunities to young people through job creation and skills development,” Tinubu stated. “Through such programs as NELFUND, we are investing in education, vocational training, apprenticeships, and internships to ensure our youth are job-ready and future-ready.”

The President also highlighted the administration’s push for digital inclusion, disclosing an ongoing nationwide fibre optic cable project aimed at boosting internet access, digital education, and entrepreneurship across urban and rural areas.

“This initiative promises not only to enhance internet speed and reliability but also to revolutionize how businesses operate, how students learn, and how communities stay connected,” he said, emphasizing that the move will bridge the digital divide and place young Nigerians at the centre of a tech-driven economy.

In further remarks, Tinubu encouraged lawmakers to support legislative efforts that prioritize youth development, job creation, and inclusive growth. “I ask you, the legislature, to join me as we enter the second half of our term to put forth innovative legislation that encourages industrial development and improves food security,” he said.

The President reiterated that empowering youth remains central to his government’s vision for a prosperous and competitive Nigeria, underscoring the link between democracy and economic opportunity.

“We must work even harder to translate broad macroeconomic gains into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he added.
