The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is currently engulfed in turmoil following conflicting reports over recent appointments to its National Working Committee (NWC).

Last week, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, announced that three key positions — Deputy National Chairman (South), Deputy National Chairman (North), and National Financial Secretary — had been filled by Ugochukwu Ubah, Alhaji Shehu Musa, and Bello Ado Hussain respectively.

The move was seen by some as a strategic step to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has vehemently denied that such appointments were ever made.

Speaking through the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Muhammad Biu, Gabam called the announcement “false, unauthorized, and misleading,” insisting no constitutional meeting was held to fill the vacant posts.

Adding fuel to the fire, SDP National Secretary Olu Agunloye confirmed that 11 out of 12 NWC members met on May 15, and eight voted to approve the appointments, while Gabam and three others opposed the decision.

Agunloye accused Gabam and his allies, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected from the APC to SDP, of fomenting discord for personal gain.

Agunloye has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the appointments.
