In a press statement, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, SP Moses Yamu, clarified that contrary to reports that the female Inspector was dismissed for exposing a policeman colleague who raped a teenage female suspect inside cell, she was shown the way out for covering up the crime for monetary gains.

According to the statement, the dismissed female police Inspector rather than reporting the rape incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) or the Incident Duty Officer, colluded with her husband, Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed to demand the sum of One Million Naira (N1,000,000) from the Sergeant who raped the victim to help him conceal the crime.

The Edo State Police Command said:

“Contrary to reports from certain quarters, the said female Police Officer, AP/no 228719 Insp. Edith Uduma was the Charge Room Officer (CRO) on 07/10/2024, the night F/No. 504694 Sgt Abraham allegedly raped a female suspect in the station.

“The female Officer, instead of reporting the incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) or the Incident Duty Officer as the case may be, for disciplinary actions to be initiated against the erring officer, took advantage of the situation to enrich herself by calling her husband AP No. 228652 Insp. Ibrahim Mohammed whom conspired with her to unlawfully demand the sum of One Million Naira (#1,000,000) from the Sergeant to assist him conceal the matter.

“However, the Sergeant afforded to offer only #45,000. Dissatisfied by his offer, they decided to report the erring officer to the DPO and also share the video on social media.

“Following these events, an orderly room trial was initiated against all the officers, which led to the dismissal of Sgt. Abraham and Insp Edith Uduma.

“Her husband, Insp Ibrahim Mohammed, however, was reduced to the rank of Sergeant for getting criminally involved in demanding for money to conceal such a gross violation of the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police”.
