Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, Olusegun Akinremi, popularly called Chief Kanran. But beyond the grief, a haunting coincidence has emerged: his final role was in Femi Adebayo’s upcoming film, Seven Doors.

Femi Adebayo, in an emotional tribute, said he never imagined that the title of the film, which symbolises thresholds and transitions, would become a metaphor for Kanran’s journey out of this world.

“He played in Seven Doors, and now it feels like life mirrored art. It’s painful and shocking. Nobody thought it would be his last act,” Adebayo wrote.

The actor passed away in a Lagos hospital on Friday after a brief illness, shortly before his 70th birthday.

Colleagues say Kanran’s dedication was unmatched, as he showed up on set with his trademark energy and passion despite his health struggles.

“He gave everything to that role, as if he knew it was his final performance,” a crew member told reporters off record.

Chief Kanran, who rose to prominence in the Yoruba theatre scene, was celebrated for his commanding voice and versatility. For many, the fact that he died soon after Seven Doors wrapped up adds a poignant note to his long career.

“Chief Kanran may have walked through the last door, but his voice and artistry will never be silenced,” Adebayo said.

The tribute from Femi Adebayo has sparked reflection in Nollywood, with colleagues and fans honouring Kanran’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to the craft until his final days.
