A group of Yoruba leaders has called on the Federal Government to remove the name of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, from the wanted list, saying he has not done anything wrong.
This appeal was made at a press conference held by the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday.
Speaking at the programme, the Deputy Leader of the group, Opeoluwa Akinola, described Igboho’s continued restriction as unjust and politically motivated.
He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to unfreeze the activist’s bank accounts, release his assets, and remove his name from the wanted list.
“The travails of Adeyemo, otherwise known as Sunday Igboho, who has vigorously and selflessly campaigned against the killing, maiming, raping and kidnapping of Yoruba sons and daughters must be revisited by this government.
“The Directorate of State Security illegally invaded his house, killed his people, incarcerated many of his relatives and forced him into exile where he was imprisoned for months in deference to the government of Nigeria. His bank accounts have been frozen indefinitely, whereas no tangible crime or allegation has been levelled against him.
“Adeyemo alias Igboho must be set free and the toga of wanted placed on his name should be removed forthwith. He has not been found guilty of stealing, robbery, kidnapping or murder.
“Those foreign Fulani elements who daily commit this kind of atrocities on our people and on our land are walking freely on Nigeria’s streets and roads today.
“Adeyemo cannot move freely in Yorubaland, his fatherland. What a cruel irony! We implore the Nigerian government to free his assets, remove the lien on his bank accounts and take his name off the wanted list,” the group asserted.
While condemning the narrative that “Lagos is No Man’s Land,” Akinola highlighted the significant backlash the assertion has generated among the Yoruba people.
“This assertion has provoked the anger of Lagosians and all who respect their heritage.
“The recent electoral victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu was celebrated as a crucial affirmation of Yoruba ownership of Lagos. Sanwo-Olu’s win is a clear affirmation of our ownership of Lagos”, he stated.
