Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has gifted Super Falcons defender Oluwatosin Demehin the sum of ₦30 million and a fully furnished apartment in Akure, in recognition of her outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Demehin, an Akure-born footballer who plays for Fenerbahçe in Turkey, was at the heart of Nigeria’s rock-solid defence throughout the tournament, playing every minute of all six matches as the Falcons soared to a historic title victory.

Receiving the 22-year-old star at the Ondo State Government House on Monday, Governor Aiyedatiwa described her as a national asset and a source of immense pride for the state.

“Oluwatosin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage,” he said. “Her discipline, dedication, and talent deserve not just praise but support that inspires the next generation.”

Demehin also registered her first international goal during Nigeria’s emphatic 5-0 quarter-final win over Zambia’s Copper Queens, a standout moment that solidified her growing stature in African women’s football. Having risen through the ranks from the Falconets, she has now become a dependable mainstay in the senior national team.

The governor’s gesture did not stop with Demehin alone. Two other Ondo State indigenes who were part of Nigeria’s victorious WAFCON squad behind the scenes—team media officer Mary Akinsola and team secretary Mary Oduboku—were also honoured. Each received a ₦15 million cash reward for their dedication and service.

The reception in Akure underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s renewed commitment to recognising excellence, not just on the pitch but in every sector where indigenes of the state continue to shine.
