President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the relocation of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGoF) from the Federal Ministry of Works to the Presidency.
The decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shortly after Thursday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and presided over by the President.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the relocation is aimed at improving coordination in the management of geospatial data and enabling direct presidential oversight of national mapping and land administration priorities.
Although the minister did not provide detailed reasons for the change, the move aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader reform agenda and growing emphasis on the use of geospatial intelligence in national planning, infrastructure deployment, security mapping, and environmental monitoring.
“This strategic decision underscores the importance of geospatial data in shaping national development, particularly in critical sectors like housing, transportation, security, and disaster response,” the minister said.
The Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation is Nigeria’s apex mapping and geospatial agency, with statutory responsibility for surveying, mapping, and providing geographic information services to support public and private sector needs.
