The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested the abductors of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, a judge of the state High Court, who was kidnapped on June 21 in Yenagoa.

Governor Douye Diri announced the arrest on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting, revealing that the victim was rescued unhurt after 12 days in captivity through a coordinated operation by security agencies.

The governor, however, noted that the gang leader remains at large, as security forces intensify efforts to track him down.

Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on crime, warning criminals to steer clear of Bayelsa. He disclosed that the state government has enhanced security with drones, CCTV cameras, and improved logistics for law enforcement agencies.

“We have greatly improved our crime-fighting efforts using technology. In the recent kidnap of a serving judge, we ensured his safe release and arrested all suspects except one,” Diri stated.

During the meeting, Governor Diri also honoured Superintendent of Police (SP) Sentome Obi, an indigene of Bayelsa, for rejecting a $17,000 bribe from a suspect involved in organ harvesting.

Praising Obi’s integrity, the governor announced a reward of a three-bedroom flat and a car for the officer, while recommending him to the Inspector General of Police for promotion.

“At a time when the Nigerian Police faces image challenges, SP Obi has proven that integrity matters. He has brought pride to Bayelsa and the Force,” Diri said.
