Activist Deji Adeyanju has declared that former president Goodluck Jonathan is the only southern politician who can secure the trust of the north ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on Facebook, Adeyanju said some members of the opposition coalition have argued that zoning the presidential ticket to the south would block former vice-president Atiku Abubakar from contesting again.

He noted that while this is a valid strategy, it comes with political risks.

His words: “I have seen the argument by some that to prevent serial contestant, Atiku, from securing the ticket, the coalition should zone to the south and shut him out from the race.

“This is also a valid argument since technically, southern Nigeria have 4 more years.”

However, he warned that most northern voters are more likely to trust President Bola Tinubu to complete a second term than to support a new southern candidate.

“The only problem with this argument is that most northerners will rather trust Tinubu’s four more years than a new southern candidate,” he said.

Adeyanju argued that only Jonathan enjoys the level of credibility and trust in the north that could challenge Tinubu’s dominance.

He added: “Only GEJ can easily secure the trust of the north with this argument. Politics is about trust, and nobody is willing to take such a risk.”
