Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has revealed that his role in leading Nigeria’s tax reform agenda under President Bola Tinubu came at great emotional cost, particularly to his family.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Oyedele said that while he took the appointment intentionally and without demanding a salary, the public attacks and media falsehoods became a heavy burden on his household.

He disclosed that his wife had to resort to nightly vigils out of concern, as online publications and blogs allegedly circulated damaging stories during the committee’s work.

“My wife was doing night vigil every night… it took a toll,” he stated.

Oyedele, who was appointed on July 7, 2023, also noted that although he made financial and career sacrifices, it was the emotional impact that proved most challenging.

The committee, which he chaired for over a year, submitted several key recommendations that culminated in the signing of multiple tax reform bills into law by President Tinubu earlier on Thursday at the State House in Abuja.

He urged Nigerians not to discourage honest professionals who choose to contribute to public service, warning that undue pressure and falsehoods could deter capable individuals from serving the country.
