The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the arrest of 28 persons in connection with the deadly attack in Yelewata, Benue State, which claimed 47 lives.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the police chief explained that out of the 28 persons taken into custody, two have been cleared after being used to lure others. The remaining 26 are believed to be the key masterminds behind the killings.

He said efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects involved in the attack.

Egbetokun assured Nigerians that the police are not overwhelmed by the scale of violence in parts of the country, adding that law enforcement agencies are working to recover illegal arms and are intensifying border patrols to prevent the influx of undocumented migrants and weapons.

In a related development, the IGP disclosed that 22 other suspects arrested in Plateau State over the murder of nine persons travelling to Quanpan for a wedding would soon be arraigned in court.

He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring justice is served and restoring peace in affected communities.
