A political appointee under the emergency administration in Rivers State, Hon. Goodluck Iheamnacho, has resigned his position, citing a desire to return to the private sector.

Iheamnacho submitted his resignation in a letter addressed to the State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas. The resignation, effective July 20, 2025, is the first of such under the emergency governance structure introduced in the state earlier this year.

“My decision is informed by my desire to return back to the private sector,” he wrote, while thanking the Rivers State Government and his constituents for the opportunity to serve.

Following his exit, security operatives were seen positioned at the council headquarters, sparking tension and raising questions about the motive behind the sudden resignation.

Although no official explanation has been given, the development comes amid heightened political uncertainty in the state. The administrator was appointed in April as part of the interim governance structure replacing elected council chairmen.

The Rivers State Government is yet to comment on the development
