In a strategic push to strengthen Nigeria’s climate diplomacy, top officials from multiple government agencies, including the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), have jointly represented the country at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.

The Director General of the ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, was among key delegates who participated in high-level technical sessions aimed at shaping global climate policies and advancing sustainable development. His presence underscored Nigeria’s integrated approach to tackling climate change through cross-sectoral cooperation.

Dr. Abdullahi was joined by Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director General of the NCCC, Prof. Innocent Bariate Barikor of NESREA, and Taraba State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Aishat A. Barde. The delegation coordinated positions and contributed to discussions on climate adaptation, gender and climate change, and the Global Goal on Adaptation.

Officials say the combined effort reflects a renewed focus on harmonizing Nigeria’s national climate strategies across institutions, ensuring that energy, environmental regulations, and sub-national initiatives are aligned with global commitments.

Dr. Abdullahi reiterated ECN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition through innovation, research, and international cooperation. “Working together with sister agencies strengthens Nigeria’s voice and effectiveness in climate negotiations,” he said.

The conference continues through the week in Bonn, setting the stage for outcomes that will feed into the next UN climate summit.
