Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has revealed that his administration is studying successful flood control strategies implemented in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States as part of a broader plan to tackle persistent flooding in Benin City.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor has commissioned environmental and hydrology experts to understudy the models developed during the tenures of former Governors Godswill Akpabio and Nyesom Wike — widely credited with transforming their states’ response to seasonal flooding.

The team, comprising four technical firms, is expected to carry out feasibility studies, terrain analysis, and real-time assessment of flood-prone areas in Edo State, particularly in Benin City and its Government Reservation Areas (GRA).

“This initiative underscores a pragmatic approach to governance,” Okpebholo said. “We are learning from working models and replicating tested solutions that have delivered results elsewhere in Nigeria.”

The governor emphasized that the strategy aims to provide a sustainable fix to the recurring flood menace, with the experts expected to submit detailed recommendations for implementation once the current rainy season subsides.

Okpebholo noted that past efforts were marred by mismanagement and diversion of funds, adding that his administration is determined to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the upcoming drainage intervention.

While a flood control project is expected to follow, the government has also hinted at demolitions along waterways, promising compensation to verified property owners and relocation support to others.

But for now, the governor insists the focus is on getting the foundation right — using data, credible blueprints, and expert evaluations to develop a long-term solution that protects lives, properties, and the state’s environment.
