The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Akwaji Ushie, for 90 days over allegations of abuse of office, financial misappropriation, and administrative highhandedness.

The suspension, which took immediate effect on Tuesday, 10th June 2025, followed the consideration of an impeachment notice signed by eight out of ten councilors of the Bekwarra Legislative Council.

The petition, dated May 19, 2025, accused the embattled chairman of consistently violating due process and undermining the rule of law in the course of her duties. The Assembly relied on Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law to effect the suspension.

In a resolution passed during plenary, the House directed Hon. Ushie to step aside for 90 days to allow for an independent investigation into the allegations against her.

The Vice Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, Hon. Egbung Odama, was immediately directed to take over as Acting Chairman for the duration of the suspension. He has been tasked with ensuring the smooth and effective administration of the council during the transition period.

Presiding over the session, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, said the Assembly’s decision was in line with its commitment to upholding transparency, accountability, and good governance at the grassroots.

He also mandated the House Committees on Judiciary and Public Petitions to commence a thorough investigation into the allegations and submit their findings within the suspension period.
