‎The announcement follows the endorsement of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, signaling strong support for the initiative.

‎

‎Okwaraji, a talented midfielder, collapsed and died on the pitch at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, in August 1989 during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Angola.

‎

‎His untimely death at the age of 25 shocked the nation, but his legacy of patriotism and dedication to Nigerian football endures. The Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, which spearheads the championship, aims to honor his memory by fostering grassroots football development through this annual event.

‎

‎In a letter signed by Ruth David, the NFF’s Acting Director of Competitions, the federation lauded the championship’s objectives, noting its potential to positively impact Nigerian youths and advance football development across the country. The NFF also commended the foundation for its commitment to nurturing young talent and contributing to the sport’s growth at the grassroots level.

‎

‎The championship, set to commence later this year, will adhere to the rules and regulations of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), as emphasized by the NFF. Organizers have been urged to ensure compliance to maintain the tournament’s integrity and align with global standards.

‎

‎Okwaraji, educated at an Italian university in Rome, exemplified patriotism by prioritizing service to Nigeria over personal gain. His dedication to the Super Eagles, then known as the Green Eagles, remains a powerful example for Nigerian youth. The championship not only celebrates his legacy but also aims to inspire future generations to embrace discipline, teamwork, and national pride through football.

‎

‎This initiative marks a significant step in preserving Okwaraji’s memory while promoting the development of young athletes across Nigeria, ensuring his contributions to the sport continue to inspire for decades to come.
