Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are holding a decisive meeting today in Abuja amid growing indications that the party has been chosen as the platform for a grand political coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The high-level meeting will receive reports from two ADC negotiating committees, which have spent months engaging with key opposition figures and civil society actors across the country.

The session is expected to ratify strategic steps and formalize the ADC’s role as the central platform for the coalition.

This development follows a major breakthrough on Tuesday night, when prominent political actors — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former governors Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Kayode Fayemi — reached a consensus to adopt the ADC as their operational base in the effort to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Sources at the meeting said the ADC was selected for its national reach, neutral posture, and flexible internal structure — qualities deemed critical for hosting a multi-party alliance.

According to a senior associate of Atiku, “They chose the African Democratic Congress as the operational base for this historic alliance.”

The ADC’s National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, confirmed the meeting in a phone interview with Nigerian Tribune, noting that the two negotiating teams — led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Bamidele Ganiyu Ajadi and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Mani Ibrahim Aman — will brief the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) today.

He said: “We’ve been engaging in consultations for over six months. The negotiating teams have toured the country, meeting with politicians, civil society leaders, and concerned Nigerians. The idea is to bring patriots together because Nigeria needs a rescue now.”

He stated that the ADC leadership would only release further details after the committees submit their reports.

“This is not just about political parties. It’s about building a broad, inclusive movement that can offer a real alternative to the Nigerian people,” he added.

Insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that while other platforms like the Social Democratic Party (SDP) were briefly considered, the SDP was largely a red herring used to divert attention from the coalition’s real plans.

Committees have now been established to finalize the coalition’s structure, policy framework, and the integration of various support groups.

A formal announcement of the coalition and its roadmap is expected in the coming weeks.

Despite concerns over lingering divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), coalition leaders are confident that unity will prevail under the pressure of shared goals and the urgency of the national situation.
