Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, on Wednesday said no fewer than 150 million Nigerians now have access to electricity across the country.
Adelabu made the disclosure during a press conference in Abuja, where he gave updates on reforms and recent developments in the power sector under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to the minister, the improved electricity access is as a result of sustained investment in infrastructure, renewed policy direction, and the ongoing implementation of cost-reflective tariffs.
“In 2024 alone, our power market recorded a 70% increase in revenue. The reforms we introduced have added over N700 billion to the market, and this is a direct reflection of the impact of our new tariff structure,” Adelabu said.
He explained that the government’s focus remains on delivering stable, affordable, and sustainable power to Nigerians, adding that efforts are ongoing to close the metering gap and reduce estimated billing.
Adelabu further noted that the revenue growth in the sector is already opening up fresh investments and allowing for faster intervention in critical infrastructure upgrades.
“We are not there yet, but we are moving in the right direction. The era of darkness is gradually fading, and our people are beginning to see the light,” he said.
The minister reassured Nigerians that the federal government is committed to ensuring that every household, particularly in underserved areas, will feel the impact of improved power delivery in the coming months.
