Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, was on Friday honoured with the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Prize in Seoul, South Korea, in recognition of his contributions to peace, democracy, and development in Africa.

The prestigious award, presented at a ceremony attended by global leaders and peace advocates, acknowledged Jonathan’s efforts in promoting democratic values and stability, particularly during and after his tenure as Nigeria’s president.

In his acceptance speech, Jonathan dedicated the award to the Nigerian people and others across the continent who strive for peace and progress.
“This honour belongs to every Nigerian who believes in peace and to every African working for positive change,” he said.

The former president emphasised the urgent need for unity and understanding among nations.
“The world is threatened by persistent conflicts, weakening democracies, and deep inequalities,” Jonathan said.
“But peace is the foundation for development, justice, and human dignity.”

He called on world leaders to prioritise dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusiveness over conflict and division.
“Peace is not a lofty ideal — it is a necessity, and one that demands bold leadership and commitment,” he said.

Dr. Jonathan also revealed that the monetary component of the award would be channelled into the activities of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to advance its mission across Africa.
“I have continued to work through platforms like the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, the West African Elders Forum, and the International Summit Council for Peace,” he stated.
“This prize encourages not just me, but all peacebuilders across Africa.”

Jonathan made global headlines in 2015 for peacefully conceding defeat in Nigeria’s presidential election.
