Nigeria’s presidency has condemned remarks made by the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, over the state of the democracy in the nation.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy said Obi’s remarks claiming that democracy in Nigeria was collapsing is only suited for headlines.

He said Obi’s claim was made without a deep reflection or a lack of solid foundation over events happening across the country.

Recall that Obi while decrying some of the incidents happening across the country said democracy in Nigeria has been completely knocked down.

The former governor of Anambra State said this while speaking at the 60th birthday celebration of Emeka Ihedioha, a former governor of Imo State.

He also cited the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers and suspension of a duly elected governor and state officers by the president. All of which he described as illegal and unconstitutional.

However, reacting to Obi’s remarks, Onanuga said he listened to the former governor speak multiple times and wonders how Nigeria’s democracy which was strengthened over a period of 26 years could have collapsed.

Onanuga in a post on X wrote, “Only a discontented and disgruntled Peter, who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides, could perceive such a democratic downfall through his lens.

“If democracy had indeed collapsed, as Peter claims, and we were living under a regime antithetical to democratic principles, he would not have been able to make his comments on Monday at Emeka Ihedioha’s colloquium,” he added.

The presidential aide further urged the former governor to retrain from making such remarks or play to the gallery.
