The House of Representatives has mandated the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to instruct all internet service providers in the country to immediately block access to websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.

This resolution was passed on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State representing the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While presenting the motion, Tafoki highlighted the growing global concern over cyber pornography, arguing that Nigeria has not taken sufficient measures to curb its spread.

He emphasized that Nigeria, as a nation with deep religious values, should take decisive action against nudity and obscene materials. Tafoki further noted that several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East had already implemented strict anti-pornography laws.

The lawmaker also referenced studies from psychologists and sociologists warning about the dangers of pornography, linking it to increased rates of addiction, adultery, and prostitution.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he said.
The motion received overwhelming support from lawmakers when Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put it to a voice vote.

Following its approval, the lower legislative chamber directed the NCC to enforce strict compliance, warning that internet service providers who fail to block access to pornographic websites will face penalties.
