The Oyo State House of Assembly at its Plenary on Tuesday urged the State Government in collaboration with other stakeholders to set machinery in motion for the establishment of Grassroots Football Teams in each of the thirty three Local Government areas in the state, with a focus on recruiting Youths from local communities, and providing them with opportunities to train and compete in organised leagues.

The plead came as part of resolves on a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Oluyole State constituency, Hon. Waheed Akintayo.

The plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin observed that the establishment of Grassroots Football Team in each of the 33 Local Government Areas in the State can serve as a similar model, providing a structured environment for youth to develop their talents while keeping them away from negative influences.

Presenting the motion, Hon. Akintayo noted that the Grassroots Football activities will engaged Youths and also bring out their various potentials and Foster discipline among them in the communities.

“Many local communities in Oyo State are witnessing a rise in substance use among young boys, often due to a lack of structured activities or positive role models. Grassroots Football Team provide an opportunity for young people to engage in meaningful activities that Foster discipline, teamwork and community spirit.

“Local Football Teams would not only serve as a positive outlet but also offer the potential for these Youths to pursue professional careers in sports.

“The Teams can also act as scouting grounds for professional clubs like Shooting Stars FC and other league – playing teams in Nigeria, creating a pathway for talented individuals to reach higher levels of the sports.” The motion added.

The House has however adjourned its plenary till Tuesday, 4th of March, 2025.
