A fatal accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday morning, left one person dead and several others injured following a high-speed collision between an 18-seater passenger bus and a truck.
The crash, which occurred around 10:30 AM, was reportedly caused by reckless driving. Witnesses said the bus driver, in an attempt to overtake another vehicle, lost control and swerved back into his lane, slamming into the rear of a truck.
Emergency response was swift, with members of the Nigerian Army and volunteers from humanitarian groups among the first to arrive. Majlis Khuddam Ahmadiyya Nigeria (Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization), one of the earliest responders, played a crucial role in rescuing victims before the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police, and other road users later joined the efforts.
Our correspondent, Abdul Quadri Olanrewaju, who was at the scene reported that a passenger seated directly behind the driver suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and head trauma. Despite efforts to evacuate him from the wreckage, he succumbed to his injuries moments before he could be rushed to the hospital. The bus driver also sustained critical injuries, with his head trapped under the truck while his body remained in the bus. It took nearly 20 minutes before he was carefully freed and transported to the hospital.
Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals by the FRSC. The ill-fated bus was reportedly en route to Zaria, Kaduna State. Other road users who arrived at the scene later confirmed that the driver had overtaken them recklessly before the crash.
A particularly emotional moment unfolded when relatives of one of the injured passengers, who were traveling on another bus to Kaduna, arrived at the scene and found their loved one among the victims. Overcome with emotion, they broke down in tears upon seeing the extent of his injuries.
The swift intervention of first responders helped prevent further casualties, underscoring the importance of immediate action in road traffic emergencies. Authorities continue to stress the need for strict adherence to speed limits and safe driving practices to prevent such tragic incidents on Nigeria’s highways.
