Nigerians in Diaspora, under the auspices of Better Nigeria International (BNI), have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to their homeland by donating millions of naira in kind and supplies to victims of the recent devastating floods in Borno State.
The Director of Humanitarian Affairs for BNI, Dr. (Mrs.) Fatima Lawson, a Kano-born humanitarian, highlighted the organization’s dedication to providing lasting solutions to challenges faced by vulnerable Nigerians.
She emphasized that their efforts extend beyond emergency relief to initiatives such as educational scholarships.
“From the Owo massacre to this recent flooding in Borno, we have always stood by Nigerians in need, and we remain committed to helping our people overcome every challenge,” she affirmed.
Dr. Salewa Olafioye, President of Better Nigeria International, and Former United Nations Diplomat described the flooding in Borno as a national disaster requiring urgent attention.
He noted that Nigerians in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany united to provide relief for their Northern brothers and sisters.
“This is about saving lives and restoring hope,” Dr. Olafioye said. “We are one country, and Better Nigeria in Diaspora is here to show that actions speak louder than words.”
Receiving the donations on behalf of Borno State, the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Think Tank (NDTT), Alhaji Baba Gana Mustapha, expressed deep gratitude for the timely intervention.
He disclosed that BNI has begun distributing blankets and rice to flood victims at designated centers in an orderly manner.
“This careful planning is to avoid the incidents of stampedes that occurred in places like the FCT, Anambra, and Oyo States, which led to government intervention and prosecution of organizers,” Alhaji Mustapha stated.
He added, “The situation in Nigeria requires meticulous coordination to prevent a breakdown of law and order during distributions. BNI’s approach ensures that victims receive relief safely and effectively.”
The donations included essential items such as blankets to combat the cold weather, food supplies, medications, and other support to help victims recover and rebuild their lives.
Dr. Titus Amadi, Secretary of BNI, emphasized that the diaspora community is committed to stepping in wherever their assistance is needed.
“As Nigerians in Diaspora, the least we can do is contribute meaningfully to the lives of those in need. This is our way of giving back to the land that made us,” Dr. Amadi remarked.
Dr. Jude, Assistant Secretary of the group, outlined the goals of BNI, urging the government to adopt proactive measures to prevent future disasters. He also encouraged more Nigerians in Diaspora to join the movement.
“Our mission is to support the vulnerable and ensure relief reaches those who need it most,” Dr. Jude said.
“However, there is a need for better preparedness to prevent disasters like these from reoccurring.”
Better Nigeria International has built a reputation for its consistent humanitarian efforts across the country. The group has previously provided scholarships to indigent students and donated millions of naira in relief materials to victims of the Owo massacre in Ondo State.
Other executives of Better Nigeria International include Dr. Mohammed Nasidi, who serves as the Director General. The Board of Directors comprises accomplished individuals such as Mr. Soga Agunloye, Dr. Abayomi Kuforiji, Madam Funke Taiwo, Lady Njoku, Dr. Cyrian Osua, Dr. Peter Toyinbo, Prince Fokun Faduyile, and Dr. Falana. Representing BNI in various regions are Hon. Justina Kamalu (USA), Carl Ezegu (Europe), Madam Kemi Iyalode (UK), Hon. Adekunle Ayoola (Poland), Mohammed (Nigeria), and Prince Joshua (Canada).
