The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called on elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, to approach his defamation case against rights activist Dele Farotimi with compassion and understanding, emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution.

In a statement issued on Friday, OPC Publicity Secretary, Yinka Oguntimehin, expressed concern over Farotimi’s recent arrest and detention, which has sparked widespread public reactions.

The group questioned the appropriateness of handling defamation, a civil matter, through criminal procedures.

“We are troubled that two prominent Yoruba figures—a father and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, and his ‘son,’ lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi—are entangled in a legal battle,” the statement read.

The OPC praised Chief Babalola as a legal luminary whose contributions to the legal profession and education in Nigeria remain unparalleled.

“His six-decade career has trained over 300 lawyers and produced numerous Senior Advocates of Nigeria. Such a legacy cannot be tarnished by any allegation,” Oguntimehin noted.

The group urged the elder statesman to exercise wisdom in resolving the matter, stating, “As a beacon of hope and a revered figure, Chief Babalola can demonstrate leadership by settling this issue amicably. This would reflect the true spirit of justice and Yoruba unity.”

The OPC reiterated its respect for Chief Babalola and encouraged both parties to seek a peaceful resolution, underscoring the broader importance of harmony within the Yoruba community.

Farotimi’s arrest has sparked calls for his release, with critics questioning the handling of the case. The incident has fueled debates about civil liberties and the criminalization of defamation in Nigeria.

On Wednesday, 5 December, the police arraigned Mr. Farotimi before a magistrate court, which granted an order remanding him in prison custody until 10 December.

Chief Babalola has yet to respond to OPC’s appeal.
