Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Present, Renewing Hope in the Future – Honoring the Immortal Mandate Of Chief MKO Abiola

June 12, 2025

Indeed, his journey from humble beginning to becoming the vice president of Nigeria and a towering figure in the political landscape offers insights into his resilience, ambition, and public service. While his place in history is certainly assured, his achievements are seldom celebrated.

Atiku, who recently celebrated his 78th birthday, was born into a poor family in Adamawa state. His determination to pursue education led him to earn a university degree, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors. Through hard work and perseverance, Atiku established himself as a successful businessman. He made significant investments in various sectors, including logistics and agriculture, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to economic development. In the banking sector, he founded a micro finance bank basically to assist women entrepreneurs where the business model is strictly designed for easy access to loan facilities for women and girl children.

In a political movement blessed with amazing talent, Atiku had to grow up fast and rose to become the trusted ally to late General Shehu Musa ‘Yaradua way back in the 1990s, which propelled him to become the most attractive politician beyond Nigeria because of his thinking, sincerity, determination, and commitment for a united Nigeria.

As vice president under Olusegun Obasanjo, he played a vital role in implementing the economic reforms and democratization efforts of the political space, which often puts him at odds with his political opponents One striking thing about this man is his unsung heroism in turning every misfortune into an opportunity. His last days as Vice President were replete with intrigues in the struggle to survive the political elimination, despite the solid record of his monumental achievements. But Waziri Adamawa did not budge; he knew there was serious work to be done in building democratic culture in a society that has suffered a prolonged military dictatorship. He also knew that much of this task fell on him, whom many considered as the real democrat.

He became more attractive to many intellectuals and the like, even beyond the shores of Nigeria, because of his strong advocacy for democratic governance, as well as the importance of inclusive politics. His efforts to promote democracy in Nigeria are indeed pivotal, especially in times of political turmoil. It is on record that even though there was glaring evidence he was rigged out in his entire contest for the presidency, he never resorted to self help instead, he chose to vent his grievances at the Courts to ensure no blood is spilled because of his political ambition.

His ability to surmount several of these obstacles speaks to his resilience and strategic acumen. What is more paramount to him is his vision for a more prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

Atiku’s plans for the country reflect a deep understanding of its complexities and potential.

At 78, Atiku continues to function as probably the most resourceful elder statesman both in deed and actions. His analysis on topical national issues is usually well thought out and deserving of attention.

Through the Atiku Abubakar Foundation, he has invested in education, healthcare, and youth empowerment, striving to uplift marginalized communities, especially in his native Adamawa State. His interventions in providing thousands of scholarships to indigent and brilliant students up to university level are noteworthy.

Certainly, these stories and many more highlight Atiku’s multifaceted life and his contributions to Nigeria beyond the political spotlight.
