Awunze was ambushed and shot dead along Ula-Pata road in Ahoada town on Wednesday night.

A source revealed that Awunze had left a protest opposite Ahoada East Council, where they were demonstrating against the tenure elongation of the Local Government chairmen in the state.

He boarded a motorcycle going to Ula-Pata road when a three-man armed gang, who had laid an ambush, opened fire on him.

DAILY POST gathered that Awunze died instantly, while the motorbike driver sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to release an official statement concerning the incident.
