The death toll from an arson attack in Kano, allegedly carried out by 38-year-old Shafiu Abubakar, has risen to 10. Fourteen others are still fighting for their lives in the hospital.

The incident, reportedly sparked by a family dispute over inheritance, has left the quiet community of Larabar-Albasawa, on the outskirts of Gezawa, in mourning.

According to initial reports, the tragedy occurred during the early morning Subh prayer at around 5:30 a.m. when Abubakar allegedly set a mosque on fire.

He reportedly sprayed petroleum around the mosque, locked the door, and ignited the blaze, trapping about 40 worshippers inside.

When the incident was first reported on Wednesday, eight people had been confirmed dead, and more than 20 were rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment.

Subsequent investigations revealed that out of the 23 people admitted to the surgical ward, nine had succumbed to their injuries. Another victim died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, bringing the total number of deceased to 10.

A visit to the hospital yesterday by newsmen revealed the dire conditions of the survivors. Fourteen patients are currently in critical condition, with medical personnel estimating their chances of survival at a mere 20 percent.

One of the few mildly injured victims, 25-year-old Shu’aibu Ibrahim, was seen outside the ward, able to walk and talk, supported by his sisters.

The atmosphere was somber, with many community members grieving the loss of multiple family members.

A bereaved mother, who lost her son, husband, and brother in the fire, expressed the community’s deep sorrow, stating, “It is now a month of continuous mourning in Larabar-Albasawa as many households have a victim of the incident.”

The tragedy stems from a bitter family feud over inheritance, which escalated into violence and has now caused widespread grief and unrest in the community.

The suspect, Shafiu Abubakar, is currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
