In a thought-provoking lecture delivered at the Eti-Osa Lecture Theatre of the renowned citadel of learning, Fountain University, Osogbo, organized by the College of Management and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science where in attendance were Dr. Raji Adesina Abdulfattah, the Head of Department (Political Science), the Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, the Chief Host, a prominent traditional ruler in Osun State, the Akire of Ikire-Ile in Ola-Oluwa Local Government Area, Oba Abdulazeez Olatunbosun Adebamij among other top distinguished individuals in the society.
The immediate past Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola OFR, who was the Guest Speaker at the event outlined innovative security strategies designed to tackle Nigeria’s pressing internal security challenges. The lecture, titled “Local Government Administration: Panacea for Development in Nigeria,” emphasized the importance of empowering local government authorities in addressing security issues at the grassroots level.
Drawing from his extensive experience and expertise as a past Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government and Chairman, of the Council of Chairmen in Ogun State between 1997 and 1998, Ambassador Isola highlighted the need for a decentralized approach to security, emphasizing the critical role of local government councils in ensuring community safety and well-being. He proposed the establishment of Local Government Area Peace and Security Committees, comprising diverse stakeholders from the local community, to effectively coordinate security efforts and address emerging threats.
Furthermore, Ambassador Isola stressed the importance of proactive intelligence gathering, threat analysis, and collaboration between security agencies and local authorities in mitigating security risks. By empowering local government councils and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, Ambassador Isola believes that Nigeria can achieve sustainable peace and development.
