The armed men were said to have encircled the community when residents were asleep before launching the attack.

A community leader, who narrowly escaped said residents were caught off guard by the sudden onslaught.

He said 19 bodies have been recovered, but local vigilantes are currently combing the surrounding bush to locate missing individuals.

The Community Leader appealed to the Kogi state governor, Usman Ahmed Ododo and Security Agencies to come to their aid by deploying more security personnel to the area.

However, another source, said the attack may be as a result of a disagreement between a young farmer in Agojeju-Odo and a Fulani herder over damage done to his farm by cattle.

The Kogi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, had deployed a tactical squad comprising Mobile Police, and Vigilante men to the area to restore order in response to a distress call.

Aya said that the Divisional Police Office of the local government confirmed the killing of 19 people while many sustained injuries in the attack.
