Former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is backing Nigeria to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mourinho, speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, said the head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, is his best friend in football.

He is now hoping Peseiro becomes the first coach from Portugal to win the AFCON.

“My best friend in football is in the final (AFCON).

“The Nigerian coach is my best friend. He grew up with me; we studied together. We went to university on the same day, and we spent five years together every day.

“We left at the same time; he is probably my best friend in football, and for him, a big opportunity to make history, because never before has a Portuguese coach won the AFCON,” Mourinho said.

Nigeria will face Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON final on Sunday night.
