“Unity in diversity” is a concept that expresses the idea that a group of people with different cultural, religious, ethnic, and social backgrounds can live together peacefully and cohesively despite their differences. This phrase is often used to promote accepting and celebrating diversity within a community, society, or nation.
The concept recognises that diversity brings a richness of perspectives, experiences, and talents. Rather than seeing differences as a source of division, “unity in diversity” encourages people to appreciate and respect each other’s unique qualities. It emphasises the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where individuals can coexist harmoniously, embracing the strength that comes from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The concept is often celebrated as a fundamental value in societies that aim to promote equality, tolerance, and social cohesion.
Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups with unique language, culture, and traditions. This diversity is a source of strength but can also challenge fostering national unity. I am an Igbo woman from the Osisioma local government area in Abia State, an APC executive and a fervent supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Over the years, there have been numerous instances of ethnic and religious violence in Nigeria, which have undermined unity and progress.
Factors Contributing to Ethnic and Religious Tensions.
Several factors contribute to ethnic and religious tensions in Nigeria, including:
1. Historical Injustices – Nigeria’s colonial history and post-colonial political experience have been marked by ethnic and religious divisions. Politicians and other vested interests have exploited these divisions to promote their own agendas.
2. Economic Inequality – Nigeria is a highly unequal country, with a large gap between the rich and the poor. This inequality is often exacerbated by ethnic and religious divisions, as certain groups are more likely to be marginalised and disadvantaged.
3. Lack of Trust and Communication – There is a lack of trust and communication between different ethnic and religious groups in Nigeria. This is due to several factors, including historical injustices, economic inequality, and political manipulation.
4. Religious Extremism – Religious extremism is another factor that contributes to ethnic and religious tensions in Nigeria. Extremist groups often use violence to promote their ideology and to target other religious groups.
Strategies for Fostering Unity.
Despite the challenges, there are several initiatives the Renewed Hope Administration of President Tinubu, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA) headed by DG Lanre Issa-Onilu and similar institutions, can adopt to foster unity in Nigeria. Here are some general strategies:
a) Promote Education and Awareness – Education is critical to promoting understanding and respect for diversity. It is essential to teach Nigerians about their own culture and history and the cultures and histories of other ethnic groups. This can be done through formal education, as well as through informal programs and initiatives.
b) Strengthen Democratic Institutions – Strong democratic institutions can help to ensure that all Nigerians have equal rights and opportunities, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. This is important for building trust and promoting unity.
c) Celebrate Diversity – Recognise and celebrate individuals’ unique contributions and achievements from different backgrounds. This fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion and highlights the value of diversity within a community.
d) Address Prejudice and Discrimination – Actively combat prejudice and discrimination through education, awareness campaigns, and policies promoting equal opportunities and treatment.
e) Celebrate Shared Values – Emphasise and celebrate common values that unite people, such as respect, compassion, human dignity, and social justice. Shared values provide a foundation for unity despite differences.
f) Promote Economic Inclusion – Economic inclusion is essential for fostering unity in Nigeria. This means ensuring that all Nigerians have access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, regardless of their ethnic or religious background.
g) Invest in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution – Investing in peace-building and conflict-resolution initiatives is vital to address the root causes of ethnic and religious tensions in Nigeria. This includes promoting understanding and respect for diversity and addressing economic inequality and injustice.
h) Leverage Technology for Connection – Utilise technology to connect individuals from diverse backgrounds, foster global understanding, and promote cross-cultural collaboration. This can be achieved through online forums, social media platforms, and virtual exchange programs.
Specific Initiatives.
In addition to the above-listed general strategies, some specific initiatives can be taken to foster unity in Nigeria. Here are some examples:
i. Establish a national reconciliation commission to address historical injustices.
ii. Create a national diversity council to promote understanding and respect for diversity.
iii. Implement affirmative action policies to ensure that all ethnic groups are represented in government and other institutions.
iv. Fund cultural exchange programs and other initiatives that bring people together from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
v. Support interfaith dialogue and other initiatives that promote tolerance and understanding between different religious groups.
vi. Encourage the use of national languages in government and public life.
vii. Promote the development of a shared national identity.
