How Sen. Anyanwu Secured Saraki’s Victory By Kizito Duru

It will surely take another remarkable political event before many of us stop discussing the political intelligence displayed yesterday by the president of the Nigerian senate, Senator Bukola Saraki. Saraki’s manoeuvring of Buhari’s plan to nail him through unconstitutional impeachment has continued to generate applause and encomiums to the kwara State born lawmaker.

However, while Senator Saraki, as expected, continues to enjoy the media attention, commendation and global recognition for this feat, it is fair to note that other Senators who are close allies to the senate president played a huge role in making sure that the country’s democracy wasn’t trampled upon by some desperados in Aso Rock. Senators Ekweremmadu, Dino Melaye, Akpabio, Abaribe and of course Samuel Anyanwu are close confidants of the the former governor of kwara State.

As at the time when the news of how the Nigerian Police Force laid siege to the residences of Senator Saraki and Senator Ekweremmadu broke out on the social media, it occured to me that the Distinguished Senator representing Imo East senatorial district, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, may have gotten a tip off about the plans of the Buhari led APC federal government to inflict an indelible negative mark on the nation’s nascent democracy, which may have informed his discision to travel back to Abuja on Monday morning, canceling his consultative meeting to a Local Government in Imo State.

When I made further inquires earlier yesterday, I was reliably told by a closer aide to the humble Senator Samuel Anyanwu that the senator, who is also a governorship aspirant, did not only walked into the Red Chamber with Saraki but also that the Senator has been with Saraki since he landed in Abuja on Monday. I may not be in the position to know whether Saraki slept in his house or not on Monday night, but one thing I am sure is that, either Senator Samuel Anyanwu spent the night with him or that he knows where Senator Saraki was. He held the information of the whereabout of the Senate President to himself only. He could have elected to to betray his friendship with Saraki by selling the much needed information to the powers that be in Aso Rock and be rewarded handsomely for it. SamDaddy would have got the slot of the Deputy senate president if he had liaised with Senator Lawan led rebellions and those that wanted to puncture our democracy. But he chose to toll the path of integrity and patriotism for the overall interest of his party, Nigeria and Nigerians.

Even at the plenary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu who is fondly called SamDaddy, was one of the first three speakers and the first to boldly and comprehensively condemn the ill treatment meted out to the leadership of the Senate by the executive arm of the government. This was the same way he raised a motion at the senate urging Saraki to close down plenary in solidarity to Senator Dino Melaye, when the latter was singled out to be disgraced by president Buhari and the Inspector General of Police. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, urged all Nigerians to condemn any undemocratic move and unconstitutional attempts made by the presidency through the Inspector General of Police to victimize the Senate and cripple the country’s legislative arm of the government.

Watching him speak with boldness in a country where one finds himself in the wanted list of DSS for opposing the action of the presidency, makes Senator Samuel Anyanwu a man to be admired and encouraged to take up more leadership roles. What would have been the condition of the National Assembly without the likes of Senators Melaye, Abaribe, Ekweremmadu and Anyanwu? Your guess is as good as mine. These men are not afraid of the small rooms in the DSS. The have displayed capacity, courage and wisdom to stand firm for justice in the face of tyranny.

Little wonder the people of Imo State have shown massive support to the governorship ambition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu. He has proven a leader, shown strength in character and one whose words can be taken to the bank. The Senate with SamDaddy has technically defeated the All Progressive Congress at the national level. It is only wise that the Imo State PDP seriously consider Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the man that will restore the lost glory days of the party in the State.
