The Nigerian Government is set to reconvene another meeting on Thursday with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to address the Union’s counter offer.
The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige said this while addressing journalists on the ongoing deliberation with the Union.
The minister said meetings were ongoing among government representatives to take a position on ASUU’s counter offer which would also require ratification of the Federal Executive Council before final positions can be made on the union’s offer.
“As we speak now, we had government side meeting and holding several meetings to formalise government’s position on ASUU’s counter offer”
“The federal government earlier requested ASUU to consult and revert back to government on its position and only very late on Monday that ASUU got back to government and which called for government further deliberation before any formal meeting can be rescheduled”
It would be recalled that the leadership of ASUU were absent from the Tuesday meeting following a letter sent to the minister of labour.
The Union stated that views of it members have been collated on the offers from Government in the dispute letter dated 16th of August 2017.
The Union added that while it waits for government’s action on its letter, it hoped it will not take long before it receives positive response that will result to an end in the dispute.
“On Thursday,17th August 2017,we met with officials of the Ministry of Education and Labor and Productivity and Employment where it was agreed that the Union should consult and ” revert back to Government “. Following sue consultation, we have collated the views of our members on the offers from Government in dispute in the letter of 16th August 2017. These views were submitted to federal Government vide our letter dated 28th August ,2017” ASUU said.
